Bus Rapid Transit, known as BRT, is a premium transit solution designed to rapidly move more people using larger vehicles, enhanced technology and increased frequency. By providing dedicated lanes specifically for rapid transit, it is more reliable and convenient than traditional bus systems.

With Central Ohio’s population expected to reach 3 million residents by 2050, investing in BRT now ensures our region has the high-capacity transit infrastructure needed to support growth and keep people moving efficiently.

The Benefits of BRT

BRT is not your standard bus service. BRT combines the capacity and speed of a metro with the flexibility and affordability of a bus system through features like:

  • Traffic signal priority
  • Platform-level boarding
  • High-capacity, 60-foot articulated vehicles
  • Modern stations
  • Dedicated transit lanes
  • Off-vehicle payment
  • And more!

BRT and Community Access

BRT removes transportation barriers by providing faster, more frequent and more reliable connections to jobs, healthcare, education and essential services across Central Ohio.

BRT stations serve as community hubs, placing grocery stores, pharmacies, schools, healthcare facilities and public services within walking distance of high-quality transit. For neighborhoods that have historically lacked reliable transit options, BRT stations and corridors create newfound independence and access to essentials efficiently and affordably.

The system prioritizes accessibility for all users. Level boarding platforms eliminate the need for ramps or lifts, allowing seamless access for wheelchairs, strollers and bicycles. Frequent service throughout the day allows riders to travel on their own schedules rather than planning their lives around limited bus routes.

BRT doesn’t just move people — it fundamentally changes what’s possible for communities that have been disconnected from opportunity. When residents can reliably reach jobs, education and services, entire neighborhoods gain the tools to thrive.
